About the UM Sailing Team and Intercollgiate Sailing Association (ICSA)

We are part of the Sailing Club at the University of Miami. The Sailingcanes are one of the oldest club sport on campus. In 2004 we formed the first competitive sailing team at the "U".

Collegiate sailing is not an NCAA sport; rather, it has its own organization, the ICSA (Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association). Our team joined the South Atlantic District (SAISA) in 2004 and and competes against universities such as Charleston, Duke, Embry-Riddle, Vanderbilt, and the University of Florida.

With the ideal sailing conditions in Miami and Biscayne Bay, UM is the perfect place for a collegiate sailing team. The team currently practices at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club in 8 Flying Juniors (FJ's) owned by CGSC. The majority of collegiate regattas are held in two-person Club 420s and Flying Juniors, or one-person Lasers.

While we are a student run organization we have 4 dedicated and outstanding volunteer coaches from the Miami sailing community, enabling us to hold practice 4 days per week and accommodate students different class schedules. Team members are required to come to at least 2 practices a week.

The University funds about half of our budget through the Student Activities fund (SAFAC). Covering practice/facility expenses and travel within District plus Championships. Expenses for travel to out of District intersectionals is funded solely through private donations. Traveling to the New England or mid-Atlantic intersectionals to compete against the best teams in the country is extremely expensive due to the cost of airfare fo 6-8 sailors, we must raise $2,000/regatta. Today we are asking you to be a part of the next great athletic team at the University of Miami. Every donation (large or small, monetary or otherwise) will take us closer to our goal.
