    New Fleet Campaign

    March 13,2011 - @CoC Charleston South Carolina

Congratulations to Miami for just edging out the home team, nationally ranked #2 College of Charleston, to win the 2011 SAISA District Championship. This performance qualifies the Canes to the 1st round of the 2011 Collegiate National Championship to be hosted by the University of Southern California April 29-May1.

Nine teams qualified to competed at the 2011 SAISA Co-ed District Championship hosted at the J. Stewart Walker Jr. sailing complex by the College of Charleston. Eighteen 420's were used for two fleets and nine races were sailed.  The first  set was sailed in 4-6 knot north west wind.  The North wind faded as the heat increased to the mid 80's.  Sailors returned to shore for a wind delay; some time for lunch, possibly a swim, some studying, or some small talk.  At 1:00 sailors returned to the water for races 3-9.  The wind filled in from the Southeast around 12 knots.  Race 3 started and the wind shifted due east and the sailors got to do some reaching.  The racing area was moved to the northern course location :"the marsh" for races 4-9.  The East wind was cool and fresh with lots of cloud cover.  The wind topped out around 18 knots and was very shifty.  In the first two races the tide was flooding (left to right current) and in races 3-9 the current was ebbing (also left to right).    Course 5; the Cooper River Cross Current Gold Cup was used for all races. One protest was heard resulting in a DSQ.
