Co-ed Sailing team wins 2012 District Championship

    April 7, 2012

Sailing Canes hosted the SAISA district fleet racing Championships and capped the most successful season in Sailing Canes history, once again advancing to the 1st round of the ICSA fleet racing National Championship. It was a full team effort for the 5-0 season record. Miami's Underclassmen composed mostly of Freshman and a few Juniors won every SAISA South points regatta on the district circuit, with the Seniors stepping in to cap the year with a sweet win against the SAISA varsity programs who all brought their "A" game to biscayne bay for some great competition.  With the last cold front of the season approaching, dropping air temperatures to a frigid 83 degrees and water temperatures around 80, created fabulous sailing conditions on Biscayne Bay. The winds were NE 14-17 knts with rapidly oscillating shifts of 15 degrees, making for some classic college sailing. Six races were sailed no breakdowns or protests. Special thanks to Ransom Everglades High School for use of their facilities, particularly the comfort of land based rotations. Also thanks to all the Canes who helped to run the event.

Congratulations to the Canes for the win at home!

The team now heads to Charleston next weekend for the District 3 on 3 Team Racing Championship and an opportunity to also advance to the 1st round of the National Championship in the 3 on 3 Tracing event. Meanwhile the Women's team will head to Clemson, SC to try and earn a berth into the 1st round of the Women's double handed National Championship.

Check out the SailingCanes Video section for some great footage of the event.
