Sailing team advances to the final round of the ICSA Gill Co-ed National Championships May 1, 2011 The energy of the White Hot Heat igniting Miami engulfed the Sailing Canes last weekend has they traveled to LA to compete in the 2011 ICSA National Semi-Finals, held off Belmont Pier in Long Beach, home of the USC Trojans. Competing in the Western semi-finals against 18 of the top teams in the country, a roster dominated mainly by teams from Boston and New England, the Canes tied for 5th with #6 ranked St Mary’s and earned the right to advance to the final round of the National Championships. I know you all probably think I should have said eastern semi finals but College Sailing has a rather complicated bracket and the Canes were seeded in the Western semi’s after winning the SAISA District Championship earlier this month @Charleston SC. Canes Junior Nick Voss skippered A-division with Nicole Popp and Nikki Bruno finishing in 6th just behind the #4 ranked Boston College Eagles skippered by Tyler Sinks with Laura McKenna and Lucy Wallace. The Canes B division was skippered by David Hernandez with Chelsea Carlson and finished 5th, also with a tie-breaker, against the USF Bulls skippered by Sean Ross and Christine Sayler. The top 9 teams in the bracket advance to the finals. This will be the Sailing Canes first trip, of hopefully many, to the final round of the Nationals. The National Championship will be sailed May 30-June 1 at the Gorge in Cascade Locks Oregon, a location know as high wind nirvana for kite and wind surfers, very different conditions than that at the qualifying event in Long Beach. That won’t bother the Canes, they say bring it on! Sailing in their home waters of Biscayne Bay gives them plenty of practice in windy conditions and they will bring additional heavy weight crews with sophomores Liam Munzenmeir and Ben Jassin. Next year the University of Miami will be host to the 2012 National Semi-finals to be sailed in downtown behind the home of the Heat’s American Airlines Arena. The Canes team captain Nick Voss wore a Heat NBA cap throughout the semi-finals hoping that both teams will advance to their Final rounds. The Sailing Canes are a Club sport and unlike varsity teams they do not receive funds from the University for out of district post-season travel. Traveling to LA for the semi-finals was pretty expensive and as soon as final exams are done we will need to raise $5,000 to get to the Finals.
